National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) Q1 Update

History of NFIRS

The Federal Fire Prevention & Control Act, 1974, established the USFA (United Stated Fire Administration) & its many programs. The National Fire Data Center (NFDC) was established to develop National Standardized Data Reporting, which encouraged and assisted Federal, State, local & other agencies (public and private), in developing fire programs on reporting information that could be used to gather and analyze fire data information.  The National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) was then developed.

Colorado started participating in NFIRS in the mid 90’s and continues to report, support, and provide information on Colorado’s fire frequency, fire causes, related fire injuries & deaths (fire service & civilian), emergency medical services, natural disasters, etc.

In 2021, Colorado had 252 fire departments that participated into the Colorado Fire Incident Reporting System (CFIRS).  Colorado fire departments have submitted over 640,000 incidents into NFIRS for 2021.  In 2021, the top three incident type calls that Colorado fire departments responded to were; EMS calls over 420,000, Good Intent calls over 93,000, and Service Calls over 52,000.  Below are figures of Colorado’s 2021 submitted incident types from Colorado fire agencies.
