Data

During the 2018 wildland fire season, there were 18 wildfire incidents that became State Responsibility Fires. Of those, 13 fires received an Executive Order and funding from the Disaster Emergency Fund (DEF), totaling an estimated $38,470,047 in suppression costs. The total estimated amount of State dollars spent on all 18 State Responsibility Fires was $40,078,197.

In 2018, there were a total of 6,184 wildland fires reported on state and private lands by local fire agencies. These burned 250,297 acres.

Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAG) are available to States, local, and tribal governments. These are for the mitigation, management, and control of wildfires on publicly or privately owned forests or grasslands. Specifically, they are for those fires which threaten a level of destruction that would constitute a major disaster. Colorado had 3 FMAG qualifying fires in 2018.

Looking at the historical data of the 20 largest wildfires in Colorado's history, five of those (25%) occurred in 2018. Thirteen (13) of those (65%) have occurred since 2010. All twenty (100%) have occurred since 2000.
